v. Haghpat

The Haghpat Armenian apostolic monastic complex is located in Haghpat village of Lori region. It was one of the most important spiritual, cultural and scientific centers in medieval Armenia. Halghpat and Sanahin monasteries and monastic complexes are UNESCO world heritage sites.
There are many legends related to the name Halghpat, according to one, father and son are fighting over building it. The son leaves. Another man hires the son to build his monastery. When the monastery is high enough, the father sees the structure, he visits his son. The father examines the monastery and after pushes the stone of the formation and says "Hakh pat". This is how they reconciled and the name Haghpat was given.
In 976, Ashot G. Bagratuni founded the first church of the monastery, St. Nshan. The founding abbot was Simeon, he also founded the monastery's spiritual school. Scholars and teaching monks were invited. In the first quarter of the 11th century, 2 chapels-coffins were built next to the Holy Sign church.
In the course of history, the monastery complex was looted and destroyed, but it still functioned. Here there is a refectory, memorials, churches and the spring of the monastery.
